GENERAL ANNOUNCEMENT
SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT: CREATING AGENTS OF CHANGE 4-8 August 1995 Snowbird Resort and Conference Center Snowbird, Utah
The American Association of Engineering Societies and the Engineering Foundation are sponsoring a conference on "Sustainable Development: Creating Agents of Change" to be held 4-8 August 1995 at the Snowbird Resort and Conference in Snowbird, Utah. The conference co-chairs are Albert Grant, Past President of AAES, and Diana Bendz, Director of Integrated Safety Technologies, IBM.
CONFERENCE PURPOSE
Sustainable development requires finding new ways to do business and demands dramatic changes in the culture of engineering. The American Association of Engineering Societies (AAES) has adopted a policy on the Role of the Engineering in Sustainable Development which puts forth six action principles requiring significant changes in engineering education and practice. These are: - Sustainable Technologies and Processes - Environmental - Economic Measurement and Analysis Education for the Profession and the Public - Information Resources - Multidisciplinary Partnerships - Engineer Engagement in Shaping Change
The primary thrust of the conference will be to identify the changes that are needed to implement these principles, to identify the barriers to achieving necessary changes, and to create "agents of change" that will help overcome these barriers. By drawing upon the knowledge and experience of experts in a wide range of disciplines and a diversity of "stakeholders," the conference is designed to produce a comprehensive set of strategies and techniques that engineers and others can use as a "tool kit" to create the environment for change essential to successful education and practice in sustainable development.
POST CONFERENCE PUBLICATION
A post conference publication is planned which will summarize the conference findings and include techniques and strategies for "creating agents of change" for sustainable development.
PROGRAM PREVIEW
In addition to Friday evening's keynote speaker, the six plenary sessions (each one focussed on one of the six action principles in the AAES policy) will each have a keynote speaker. Breakout sessions (with facilitators and recorders) will follow with participant discussion and recommendations. The conference participants will then meet in plenary session with each breakout session presenting a summation of its discussion and its recommendations. The final plenary session will be devoted to achieving consensus and agreement on a comprehensive set of strategies and techniques that will enable engineers to work as agents of change in moving people and organizations toward sustainable development.

ENGINEERING FOUNDATION CONFERENCES
Engineering Foundation Conferences were established in 1962 to provide an opportunity for the exploration of problems and issues of concern to engineering from many disciplines. The format for this conference includes major presentations by invited keynote speakers and concurrent breakout groups with presentations. It also includes available time for ad hoc meetings and informal discussions which is designed to enhance rapport among participants and promote dialogue on the developments of the meeting. We believe that this conference will be instrumental in generating ideas and disseminating information to a greater extent than is possible through more conventional forums. Invited participants will be expected to stay for the duration of the conference and to actively contribute to discussions.
SNOWBIRD RESORT AND CONFERENCE CENTER
The Snowbird Resort and Conference Center is located just 29 miles from the Salt Lake City Airport and sits at the heart of some of nature's grandest creations - the 11,000 foot peaks of the Wasatch Mountains. There is easy shuttle service (Canyon Transportation - 800-255-1841 - reservations required) to Snowbird from the airport. Conferees will be housed in condominium lodges and the meeting sessions and meals will be at the Snowbird Center. Snowbird is a self-contained walking community - everything is nearby.
Snowbird offers many activities for the entire family with supervised activities for children four years of age and older. The children's program includes a variety of activities such as swimming, tennis, arts and crafts, tram rides, nature hikes, games and field science. A minimal fee is charged and if you are interested in this program, please call Snowbird at 800-453-3000.
Adults may take advantage of many activities - both on property and nearby - in the afternoons when sessions are not scheduled. Among these are aerial tram rides which provide a beautiful view of the surrounding Wasatch Mountains and the Salt Lake Valley from the base elevation of 8,000 feet to the 11,000 foot Hidden Peak; Health Spa which offers hydro therapy, body massage, herbal wrap, facials, aerobics and weight rooms; swimming and saunas; shopping at the shops and boutiques; tennis (rental racquets and balls are available); hiking in the mountainsides - an enjoyable and pleasant experience for all fitness levels; mountain bike rentals (helmets and water bottles included); rock climbing school. Nearby one can golf at three area courses, play racquetball or squash, or tour Salt Lake City.
CONFERENCE FEES
The conference fee is all inclusive. It includes registration, accommodations, meals, taxes and gratuities from dinner on Friday through lunch on Tuesday. The fees are tentatively set at:
Participant (sharing room with another participant) $790. Participant (single occupancy or sharing room with guest) $890.
