Please allow me to introduce Safe Water International, and to ask for help on our survey of household water treatment systems and storage devices.

SWI is a non-profit NGO dedicated to addressing the water and sanitation needs of the rural poor. We are a collaboration of a group of academics and researchers who have worked together for many years on water research, planning and policy.

Our particular focus is on household water treatment systems and associated drinking water storage. We seek to determine whether there are household water purification systems now in use or development which can be put more fully into the service of those in poor regions of the world that need clean water solutions. For the past three months we have been at work on the first stage of that project, a state of the art survey of household level water purification systems and associated storage devices.

We are attempting to catalog the universe of small-scale water purification systems and related storage techniques presently used by single families or small groups of families. Once we have identified the bulk of these systems, we will seek with the help of the NGO community and technical experts to evaluate identified systems from the standpoint of their potential for successful distribution in the villages and neighborhoods of needy regions.

SWI would be most grateful for any contribution you or your colleagues are able to make. We seek any form of information about existing small water purification systems, or related development projects: Descriptive information, illustrations or technical data would be very helpful. Additionally, we would be most grateful for any references to those who are working with such systems. It would be particularly useful to have an Internet address for those individuals, if one is available.

Please contact me if any further information would be helpful. I can be reached on the Internet at mailto:siegel@rain.org. The mail address for SAFE WATER INTERNATIONAL is 5184 Cambridge Lane, Carpinteria, California 93013 USA. Phone is 805-684-3911. Faxes can be sent to the same number.
