International Geographical Union Study Group on the Geography of Sustainable Tourism Regional Symposium:

2-4 September 1995

The International Geographical Union Study Group on the Geography of Sustainable Tourism will be hosting a regional symposium on the Geography of Sustainable Tourism with special emphasis on Australia, New Zealand, South-West Pacific and South-East Asia in September, 1995. The Symposium is designed to provide the opportunity for discussion and paper presentations on a range of topics associated with tourism, leisure and recreation, and sustainable tourism issues in particular. Potential topics include:

* Sustainable tourism and recreation * Cultural and heritage tourism * Nature-based tourism and recreation * New approaches to the methodology and theory of tourism and recreation geography * Tourism and regional development * Rural Tourism and Recreation * The political dimensions of tourism development * Any relevant area of tourism and recreation studies

A special session on CER and Australian and New Zealand Tourism will be held on the morning of the 3 September. This special session is jointly organised by the Centre for Tourism at the University of Otago, New Zealand, and the Centre for Tourism and Leisure Policy Research and the Centre for New Zealand Studies at the University of Canberra.

SUBMISSION OF PAPERS

Abstracts must be received by 31 July, 1995. Abstracts must be no more than 300 words and should detail title, authors, and authors' affiliations. Abstracts must be on a 2.3 inch high-density AppleMac disk if the abstract is to be included in the Symposium programme.

A note regarding acceptance of papers will be forwarded within one week of receipt of abstract.

A Symposium schedule will be sent to attendees by the 7 August, 1995. Paper presenters are requested to bring at least 30 copies of their papers along to the Symposium.

PUBLICATION OF PAPERS

Manuscripts will be considered for the Journal of Sustainable Tourism. Depending on the number and quality of papers a special issue will be developed arising from the conference themes. Papers will be subject to the Journal's normal refereeing process.

Manuscripts must be received by 10 September 1995, in the JOST style on a 2.3 inch high-density AppleMac disk. Late manuscripts will not be accepted.

JOST style and further details regarding publication will be sent to delegates upon receipt of their expression of interest.

Wine Tourism Field Trip

Monday 4 September: Wine Tourism in the ACT and Region Payment received by 31 July AUD$60

The ACT and region is rapidly gaining a reputation as a quality producer of cool climate wines. The 1995 vintage being regarded as one of the best on record. The Tourism Programme at the University of Canberra has been involved in a number of research projects on wine tourism in the ACT and region. Details of some of this research will be presented during the tour. The tour will be conducted by National Capital Wine Tours and will include visits to three wineries, meetings with the wine makers, tasting, and a gourmet lunch. Because space will be limited it is vital that payment for the wine tourism field trip accompany the conference fee.

Additional field trips can be arranged with local tour operators

Accommodation

* University accommodation is available at approximately $70 a night. * Non-university accommodation is also available at competitive prices.

Details of non-university accommodation will be sent to delegates upon receipt of their expression of interest.

CANBERRA

Canberra, Australia's national capital, is situated within the Australian Capital Territory which occupies 2,340 square kilometres of southern New South Wales, an area previously know as "the Limestone Plains". Located between the Great Dividing Range and the coastal scarp, at an altitude of 580 metres, Canberra enjoys the full spectrum of seasons and considerable variations in temperature. In September the average maximum temperature is 15.9 degrees celsius, whilst the average minimum temperature is 2.9 degrees celsius.

The population of the Australian Capital Territory is approximately 300,000. Over 95% of this population is within Canberra, making the National Capital Australia's largest inland city. Canberra is well serviced by public transport between state capital cities and the surrounding country areas of New South Wales. By private vehicle Canberra is a three hour journey from Sydney and seven hours from Melbourne. Canberra is also well serviced by two major airlines (Qantas and Ansett) operating frequent daily services between Sydney-Canberra and Melbourne-Canberra.
