I see a close parallel to the other 'net issue of quoting a message in full when one's own contribution may be directed at only a couple of lines.

likewise, the value of the net is only in proportion to its *information* content. Any message - not just those from commercial interests - should be looked at critically and tested whether it is saying anyhting besides, "Look at me, Im on the Internet."

I recognizd that even signing a mesage is in this sense advertising - there may well be interest in knowing how someone spells her name, etc, but it is certainly not the content.

The proposed moral is: Contribute to the conversation and keep the straight-out ads to the size of a sig. file.
