INDIA CONTINUES WIND BUILDUP, SEES PRICES MOVING LOWER

India's Ministry of Non-Conventional Energy Sources says that country may become the world's second leading producer of wind energy (after the U.S.) during the next three years, according to Modern Power magazine.

By the end of this year, total installed wind capacity is expected to reach 116 MW in seven states, with 80 MW of that total being privately-owned projects. By the end of 1995, another 150 MW should be added, and projects totaling some 900 MW are under discussion. If all of this capacity is built, it would put India in serious competition with Germany, where wind farms totalling around 700 MW should be in place by the end of 1995.

The capital costs of new wind projects are comparable to those of new thermal power plants, the ministry said, and are expected to decline in the future, while conventional energy costs are project to rise.

The Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB) plans to add 80 MW of wind to an existing installed base of 88 MW by April, 1995, the article said. Karnataka's state government is building a 5-MW project at Kappatguda, and Vestas RBB India, Ltd., is installing a 2-MW facility, with nine 225-kW turbines, for the Karnataka Power Corp. and the Kerala Electricity Board.

In other international news, Belgian turbine manufacturer WindMaster has won a contract from the Israel Electricity Corp. (IEC) for construction of a 7.2-MW wind farm consisting of 24 300- kW units. The turbines will have 50 percent Israeli content by value. _______________________________________________________________________________

The American Wind Energy Association (AWEA) has authorized me to offer an electronic edition of its newsletter, _Wind Energy Weekly_, from which the above article is excerpted, at no cost.

For those of you who have not previously seen excerpts from back issues, the _Weekly_ reports on the outlook for renewable energy, energy-related environmental issues, and renewable energy legislation in addition to wind industry trade news. The electronic edition normally runs about 10kb in length.

The free electronic edition of the _Weekly_ is intended as an educational publication for those without a commercial interest in the wind energy industry. If your interest in wind is commercial in nature, please write to mailto:<windmail@mcimail.com> for more information about AWEA membership and publications.

If you would like a free electronic subscription, send me an e-mail request. Please include information on your position, organization, and reason for interest in the publication. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Tom Gray mailto:tgray@igc.apc.org
