     I must add that curtailing the number of births is quite a different
     thing from allowing those who have already been born to suffer and die
     of disease, hunger, war, etc.

I think it is well know that the populations pressure is not a result of the brithrate as much as a decline in the death rate. The basic philosphy is that everyone who makes it into this world is entitled to a long heathy life. The solution for sustainining the globe remains curtailing the birth rates.
