Why aren't the organizers thinking about some sort of
text broadcast of the conference (If they are talking about $1,000s for
video for New York, they might be able to spare $1,000s for text for the
rest of the world).

Re Video teleconferencing: A further option would be Internet video teleconferencing, which is apparently beginning to reach higher quality potential, and would enable thousands or millions to tie in from their homes. We're exploring it for our upcoming Industrial Ecology and The Natural Step meetings, and while the timing isn't sufficient to have it in place next month, hope to have a good system developed soon.
