I am new to this list, so please excuse me if I'm bringing up a topic that has already been discussed to death.I am thinking about doing research on the effect of foreign aid on a country's sovereignty. I have only begun to look at the literature, but I would be interested in the impressions of people working in the field. I have heard talk on other mailing lists about the problem of the US, in particular, trying to export its political structure. Is this a real problem? A perceived problem? Or maybe no problem? I know the dependency theory literature addresses these issues, but the structure of foreign aid has changed significantly since the end of the cold war and new programs specifically to promote democracy create new issues. I am particularly interested in looking at structural adjustment programs and the problems they may create for fledgling democracies.
Any insights on this topic would be appreciated. Literature sources would also be appreciated. Personal experiences/impressions in other countries would also be very helpful.
Thank you!
