International Study Tour Modern Techniques in Fertilizer Distribution and Handling September 10-28, 2001

United Kingdom, France, The Netherlands, and Belgium

Organized by International Fertilizer Development Center (IFDC) Muscle Shoals, Alabama (U.S.A.) In Cosponsorship with International Fertilizer Industry Association European Fertilizer Manufacturers' Association European Machine Trading

Physical distribution of fertilizer represents most of the cost in marketing systems. It is therefore very important to use the most cost-efficient and effective technology to serve the market and to minimize distribution costs. To assist in developing the necessary expertise, IFDC is organizing an international study tour on modern techniques in fertilizer distribution and handling, based in Western Europe. With the cooperation and assistance of the fertilizer industry, equipment manufacturers, international fertilizer trade service providers, terminal operators, and others, participants will visit facilities in the United Kingdom, France, The Netherlands, and Belgium to observe modern systems and equipment. Additionally, presentations will be made on a range of topics.

Objectives 1. To improve the participants' knowledge of the latest developments in equipment and methods for distribution and handling of fertilizer, particularly bagged fertilizer, but with due attention to bulk and semi-bulk systems. 2. To improve the participants' knowledge of the physical and chemical properties of the various fertilizer raw materials and products; the impact of the distribution and handling system on product quality; and techniques and methods used to minimize or eliminate the impact of the distribution and handling system on product quality. 3. To improve the participants' awareness of the knowledge, skills, and services required in carrying out an international fertilizer trade transaction. 4. To increase the participants' knowledge and understanding of the principles involved in the planning and operation of effective and economic physical distribution systems for fertilizer.

Program Content Highlights The program will consist of a combination of field trips and presentations. The field trips will consist of visits to manufacturers of weighing/filling, bagging, and palletizing systems; mobile bagging equipment manufacturers; manufacturers of conveying equipment and other fertilizer handling equipment; port facilities and manufacturers of port handling equipment; blending equipment manufacturers; fertilizer compound and blend producers; warehouse manufacturers; and bag manufacturers. Many of the presentations will be strategically placed throughout the study tour to complement the next day's field trips. Other presentations will be included throughout the 3-week study tour that will help achieve the overall program objectives.

Additionally, during the course of the study tour, two 1-day seminars will be held:
    (1) "International Fertilizer Trade Transaction Requirements and Services." This seminar will include presentations on Incoterms and other shipping terms; international transport documents; tender requirements, preparation, and tendering process; chartering and charter parties; cargo inspection; fertilizer product specifications; resolving international disputes; and the role and services provided by traders, shippers, shipbrokers, charterers, freight forwarders, and ship agents.
    (2) "Fertilizer Caking and Dust Problems." This seminar will include presentations on the causes of caking and dustiness and the methods of prevention/minimization. Most of the presentations will be made by manufacturers of anti-caking and dedusting agents, dust suppression equipment, and delumpers.

The program will also provide the participants an opportunity to make a presentation about their company or country situation with respect to fertilizer distribution and handling.

Participants will receive extensive printed material including lecture papers and a variety of other technical literature.

Visa and Immunizations Applications for necessary visas should be made as early as possible. Those participants who are not eligible to enter the Schengen states (see below) without a visa should follow the directions below.

GENERAL INFORMATION ON THE SCHENGEN VISA (for a stay up to 3 months)

Since the 25th March 2001, the Schengen Visa has been introduced by the following member-states of the European Union who are signatories of the Schengen Agreement: Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Italy, Luxembourg, The Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, and Sweden. Nationals of these countries do not need visas.

The Schengen Visa issued by an Embassy or a Consulate of the above countries allows the holder to move freely in all these countries within the validity of the visa. If you intend to visit several Schengen countries without a main destination, you should apply for a visa at the Embassy of the first country that requires you to have a visa, i. e., for this program France. Additionally, you may need a visa for the United Kingdom.

Applications should be made in person at the Embassy that is responsible for your place of residence.

The following documents must be provided:
    * A passport or official travel document accepted by the Schengen countries and valid for at least three months longer than the validity of the visa with a blank page to affix the visa sticker.
Note: If the validity of a passport or official travel document is restricted to only a few Schengen countries, it is possible to issue a visa. Its validity will, however, be limited only to the countries which accept the passport or official travel document.
    * One application form duly completed and signed by the applicant with one passport-sized photograph. More application forms and photographs may be required.
    * Participants should try to obtain a tourist visa. Otherwise you will need proof of the purpose of your visit. This should take the form of an official letter of invitation (to be obtained by the person you are visiting or business partner), and a confirmed onward or return airline ticket and, where applicable, a confirmed hotel booking. (IFDC will assist with the letter of invitation, if it becomes necessary and a tourist visa is not available.)
    * Evidence that you have sufficient funds to cover the cost of your intended stay (e.g. traveler's cheques, credit cards or bank statement).

All required immunizations and health formalities should be completed. Medical insurance should be obtained by participants. The registration fee does not cover any medical expenses.

Timing and Accommodation Arrangements The study tour will commence on Monday, September 10, 2001, in Nottingham, England. Further details of travel and accommodations will be provided to participants upon registration. Participants should plan to arrive in Nottingham one or two days before the commencement of the program in order to adjust to possible time changes. East Midlands Airport near Nottingham is served by regular daily flights from Amsterdam, Brussels, Frankfurt, and Paris. Nottingham is a one hour drive from Birmingham International Airport.
