International Training Program on
Development of Fertilizer Recommendations for Optimum Crop Production
August 13-22, 2001
Lilongwe, Malawi
Organized by
International Fertilizer Development Center
Muscle Shoals, Alabama (U.S.A.)
In cosponsorship with
The Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation
Government of Malawi
Farmers throughout the world have a fundamental question about how much
fertilizer to use. Many factors influence or change the response to
fertilizer from year to year and often make the question difficult to
answer. The question becomes more urgent and difficult when fertilizer and
crop prices are subject to uncertainty. The program will equip the
participants with the appropriate skills to provide sound recommendations on
fertilizer use under widely varying field conditions, cropping systems, and
socioeconomic situations of farmers in developing countries.
Program Objectives
The program has the following objectives:
* Review practical concepts in soil fertility and fertilizer
technology and use as related to fertilizer efficiency and agricultural
production.
* Review of information and practical concepts for making fertilizer
recommendations to farmers.
* Improve participants' skills in techniques required to generate,
process, analyze, interpret, and report data and information from fertilizer
experiments and on-farm trials.
* Use basic modeling techniques to evaluate fertilizer practices,
evaluate risk, and improve fertilizer recommendation practices.
* Provide basic economic concepts and economic analysis techniques
supporting fertilizer use and evaluation.
Practical Applications
Through this program, participants will increase their knowledge and
understanding of developing efficient, practical, and economic fertilizer
recommendations. Participants will use practice exercises to develop skills
in such procedures as design of experiments, fertilizer response functions,
and crop simulation models. Throughout the program, emphasis will be given
to the use of data analysis concepts in fertilizer evaluation and
recommendations.
Faculty
Specialists from IFDC's multidisciplinary and multinational staff will
present the program, in collaboration with invited specialists from
international agricultural research and development institutions.
Method of Instruction
A classroom-type instruction format will be used. Considerable time will be
allocated for discussion, problem solving, and hands-on computer exercises
and software for fertilizer recommendations.
Participants
The program is designed for agronomists, soil scientists, and professionals
working in the following areas: soil fertility, agricultural economics,
technical assistance, education, and extension services. Participants should
have experience in a national agricultural institution, an NGO active in
agriculture, or fertilizer industry. Basic knowledge of soil fertility and
statistics is required. The program will be conducted in English.
Registration Fee
The program fee is US $1100 due with the application for enrollment one
month prior to the commencement of the program. After that a late fee
applies. The program fee covers the registration for the program,
transportation for field trips, resource material, and tea/coffee breaks on
program days. It does not cover food and lodging expenses during the program
or cost of air transportation between Lilongwe, Malawi, and the
participant's home country; each participant is responsible for these costs.
Food and lodging expenses will average about $100 per day.
When and Where
The program will begin on August 13, 2001, and end on August 22, 2001. The
program will be held in a hotel in Lilongwe, Malawi. Board and lodging of
participants will be arranged in the same hotel where the program is held.
Participants will be responsible for payment of their board and lodging. A
package of detailed information concerning the training program,
accommodations, and other arrangements will be sent to accepted applicants.
How to Apply
To enroll in the program, complete the attached form and send it to IFDC
Headquarters in Muscle Shoals, Alabama (U.S.A.) by fax, e-mail, or by mail
by July 13, 2001. If an organization wishes to enroll more than one
participant, information for each applicant is required.
Visa and Health Requirements
A visa may be required to enter Malawi. Each participant must ascertain visa
requirements from the Embassy of Malawi in their country of residence. A
yellow fever vaccination may be required to enter Malawi. Participants
should inquire whether other health formalities need to be fulfilled.
Weather
Weather in Lilongwe during August is pleasant. The temperature ranges from
25°C to 8°C.
Since 1974 the International Fertilizer Development Center has held about
570 workshops, study tours, and training programs for about 7,500
participants from approximately 145 countries. The programs have covered a
wide range of subjects including fertilizer marketing, production,
distribution and handling, and numerous specialized subjects. In recent
years related courses on sustainability, computer modeling and simulation,
fertilizer recommendations, and environmental aspects of fertilizer
production and use have attracted participants from around the world.
Additional information on our 2001 program agenda will be sent promptly upon
request. We welcome your participation and encourage you to share program
information with others.
We urge all prospective participants who require a visa to attend a program
to begin the application process as soon as possible. In the past, some
registered participants had to cancel attendance because of late application
for a visa that resulted in the visa being issued well after the program had
started.
