I am trying to gather information on organizations doing innovative
work on enterprise and job development in rural village settings. I
hear a lot about credit-only programs, but my observation is that it
may not be for everyone as some people are not very entrepreneurial
but still want to work. It seems that these microenterprises often
stay marginal because of other institutional/geographic/social or
political issues. What is the state-of-the-art in subsector
development, flexible manufacturing networks, business incubators, and
job creation and how successful are these efforts? How can NGOs
encourage or support employment generation in the rural areas? What
role should they play?
