Announcement of UNU/ZERI Electronic Seminar

Title: Integrated freshwater Aquaculture Systems Date: 1-17th September 1995 By: Prof. George Chan (Mauritius) Cyberspace: mailto:UNU.CONF-ROOM.JIZO@CAREN.NET Organized by: Mr. Eng-Leong Foo, The United Nations University, Tokyo =================================================================

ABSTRACT

Rapid economic development and urbanization have led to many pollution problems, this is particularly important and of great concern in developing countries. Disposal of organic wastes and inorganic nutrients is particularly problematic when they are discharged into rivers, lakes and coastal waters. Integrated systems has been used traditionally in many countries and especially in China where these systems combine livestock, aquaculture, agriculture and agro-industry to use wastes as resources in a complex food- chains for the production of new products. The discussion will include the implementation of integrated biosystems in other countries.

About the Author: ----------------- Prof. George Lai Chan is a retired environmental engineer and has worked in several countries and especially in the Pacific. He currently operates projects in China, Vietnam, Bangladesh, and Namibia and is currently a consultant to UNU/ZERI to help implement pilot integrated biosystems in developing countries.
