          Sustainable Development Policy Institute (SDPI)
                         Islamabad Pakistan

The Sustainable Development Policy Institute invites applications for the position of Executive Director, to succeed Dr. Tariq Banuri, who has announced his intention to step down at the end of 1995. The Executive Director, who is the chief executive officer of the institute, is appointed for a term of five years, renewable once with mutual agreement. SDPI offers an attractive salary package, commensurate with the qualifications and experience of the successful candidate.

THE INSTITUTE SDPI is an independent, non-profit, research institute, established to provide policy advice to the government as well as non-governmental organisations on sustainable development-- namely development that is environmentally as well as socially sustainable-- with a specific foucs on Pakistan's National Conservation Strategy. SDPI has a staff of over 20 full time professionals and an additional 20 part time or administrative staff members. Overall governance is in the hands of a 12-member Board of Governors, chaired by Mr. V. A. Jafarey, currently Advisor to the Prime Minister of Pakistan on Finance and Economic Affairs. Internal decision making is based on a strong tradition of collective management, involving all senior faculty members in a committee structure.

SDPI's research programme is divided into three broad areas: support to government and NGOs, policy research in sustainable development issues, and contirbution to the development of research infra- structure in the country.

The ideal applicant would be in her/his forties, with a PhD in a discipline related to sustainable development; extensive experience in Pakistan as well as the international level in research, education, or government; excellent written and oral communication skills; sensitivity to linkages between environment and development especially in a southern context; an ability to guide the multi- disciplinary research programme of the Institute; a willingness and ability to enhance the Institute's funding and its reserch reputation; and a desire to work in an environment with an established tradition of collective facutly governance. Qualified women are especially encouraged to apply.

Short-listed candidates will be interviewed by the Board of Governors at or before the next Board meeting on October 25, 1995; and will be expected to join as soon as possible thereafter, but no later than December 1, 1995.
