/* Written 11:52 AM Aug 22, 1995 by tomgray in igc:energy.news */ NEW WORLD TO SUPPLY PV POWER TO ARGENTINA SCHOOLSNew World Power Corp. of Lime Rock, Conn., is planning to provide solar power to 183 Argentinian schools in Santa Fe province, according to a news release. Photovoltaic equipment will be installed at the schools, which are all located within a 77,000-square-kilometer area.
New World has a joint venture agreement with Solartec, S. A., which is 51 percent owned by New World. The joint venture company, New World/Solartec, was recently awarded a $2.6 million contract for the project. Financing for the project will be provided by the World Bank.
Installation of the photovoltaic arrays will begin immediately, according to New World, and the entire project is scheduled for completion in March of 1996. Siemens Solar Industries will supply the photovoltaic cells that will produce power for lighting, water pumping, communications equipment, and food refrigeration.
Solartec, S. A. of Argentina fabricates photovoltaic systems and distributes photovoltaic products in South America. The company serves large telecommunications customers, privatized utilities, and government projects in Argentina and other countries that are members of the common market of South America.
New World also recently signed a 15-year power purchase contract to finance a series of wind-diesel generating plants in Argentina (see Wind Energy Weekly #637, March 6, 1995).
