INVASIVE PLANT RESEARCH CHARLES DARWIN RESEARCH STATION

Location: Charles Darwin Research Station (CDRS), part of the Charles Darwin Foundation, a non-profit international organization that conducts scientific research and educational programs to promote conservation in the Galapagos Islands, Ecuador.

Introduced plants threaten the native flora of Galapagos. Plant introductions number over 350, and have increased in parallel to the Islands' 8% annual human population growth rate. Aggressive invaders include quinine (Cinchona), blackberry (Rubus), lantana, and guava (Psidium guajava). Research is required to help control these species and identify potential new aggresive invaders, to avoid their spread into Galapagos National Park.

Responsibilities:

1. Plan, execute, and evaluate activities in Ecology and Control of Invasive Plants: research, technology transfer, and education for local communities.

2. Supervise and train personnel and students in research techniques for control of invasive plants.

3. Collaborate with ongoing research on replacement of invasive species with nonaggressive agroforestry trees, to manage buffer zones of the agricultural zone near Galapagos National Park boundaries.

4. Advise and coordinate work closely with Ecuadorian institutions, especially the Galapagos National Park Service (GNPS) and Provincial Agricultural Division (DPA).

5. Prepare scientific, educational, and popular articles for international, national, and institutional publication, to promote and inform about research results and activities in the Area.

6. Coordinate management of Research and Control projects funded by international donors.

7. Actively seek funding for research and conservation activities.

8. Organize and participate in courses, seminars, workshops, and other training activities that build capacity at CDRS and GNPS.

Requirements

1. Minimum: Ph.D. in plant or forest ecology, agronomy, or related field; strong background in experimental design and statistics; experience with woody plant control preferred. Must be associated with a research institute or university in a European Union country.

2. Bilingual Spanish/English: fluent written and oral Spanish, strong English.

3. Excellent physical condition, well adapted to harsh field conditions.

4. Two years work experience, preferably in Latin America; experience in supervision and administration of scientific projects and guidance of students.

5. Adaptability to complex multicultural environment, good interpersonal skills, strong at teamwork, especially with field workers and the community.

6. Dedication to the CDRS goals and programs for conservation in Galapagos.

ECOLOGY AND CONTROL OF INTRODUCED MAMMALS CHARLES DARWIN RESEARCH STATION

Location: Charles Darwin Research Station (CDRS), part of the Charles Darwin Foundation, a non-profit international organization that conducts scientific research and educational programs to promote conservation in the Galapagos Islands, Ecuador.

Introduced mammals threaten the native fauna of Galapagos. Feral goats are destroying native ecosystems on Santiago Island, and ruining giant tortoise habitat on Alcedo volcano. Feral pigs consume eggs of endemic reptiles on the larger islands. Cats, dogs, and rats hunt and kill young of many endemic species. Research is required to implement new, cost-effective, control stategies to assist Galapagos National Park managers protect these unique ecosystems.

Responsibilities:

1. Plan, execute, and evaluate research, conservation, and educational activities, focused on Integrated Control of Introduced Mammals, in the Galapagos Islands.

2. Coordinate management of Research and Control projects funded by international donors.

3. Advise and coordinate work closely with Ecuadorian institutions, especially the Galapagos National Park Service (GNPS).

4. Actively seek funding for research and conservation activities.

5. Supervise personnel and volunteers.

6. Guide Ecuadorian students performing undergraduate thesis projects.

7. Prepare scientific, educational, and popular articles for international, national, and institutional publication, to promote and inform about research results and activities in the Area.

8. Organize and participate in courses, seminars, workshops, and other training activities that build capacity at CDRS and GNPS.

Requirements

1. Minimum: Ph.D. in animal ecology and control or wildlife management; experience in field testing and evaluating control methods; strong statistics and analytical ability. Must be associated with a research institute or university in a European Union country.

2. Bilingual Spanish/English: fluent written and oral Spanish, strong English.

Introduced invertebrates threaten the native fauna of Galapagos. Increased cargo and human traffic to the islands parallel tourism growth, and species introductions escalate. Research is required on native and introduced invertebrates, and on implementation and effectiveness of continental and interisland quarantine.

Responsibilities:

1. Plan, execute, and evaluate activities in Entomology: research, conservation, and education. Focus on: a. Quarantine Program for Galapagos Islands b. Biodiversity and effects of introduced animals in the Galapagos Islands

2. Supervise and train personnel and students in Entomology and biological research on introduced animals.

ENVIRONMENTAL MONITORING / GIS SPECIALIST CHARLES DARWIN RESEARCH STATION

Location: Charles Darwin Research Station (CDRS), part of the Charles Darwin Foundation, a non-profit international organization that conducts scientific research and educational programs to promote conservation in the Galapagos Islands, Ecuador.

Responsibilities:

1. Direct and expand the long-term Environmental Monitoring Program at CDRS in the Galapagos Islands: coordinate monitoring efforts of scientists, amateur and professional naturalists, and students.

2. Aid scientists in application of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to address natural resource management problems in Galapagos National Park, Marine Resources Reserve, and the agricultural zones.

3. Provide statistical and database management support to CDRS staff, and help undergraduate students with project design and evaluation.

4. Supervise meteorological stations on Santa Cruz, Isabela, and San Cristobal Islands; advise and coordinate work closely with Ecuadorian institutions, especially the Galapagos National Park Service (GNPS), Oceanographic Institute (INOCAR), Fisheries Institute (INP), and Geographic Institute (IGM).

5. Actively seek funding for the Monitoring/GIS program.

6. Prepare technical reports, and publish results in international, national, and institutional journals.

Requirements

1. M. Sc. or Ph.D. in a Biological Science with extensive experience in GIS applications. Must be associated with a research institute or university in a European Union country.

2. Strong numerical background, including statistics, experimental design, and computer science.

ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION SPECIALIST CHARLES DARWIN RESEARCH STATION

Location: Charles Darwin Research Station (CDRS), part of the Charles Darwin Foundation, a non-profit international organization that conducts scientific research and educational programs to promote conservation in the Galapagos Islands, Ecuador.

A strong program of participative and innovative environmental education is essential to the success of conservation programs in the Galapagos Islands of Ecuador. The purpose is to modify behaviors of target audiences, to achieve their participation in the protection of Galapagos' unique natural environments.

Responsibilities:

1. Direct and expand the Environmental Education Program at CDRS in the Galapagos Islands: coordinate efforts of educators, environmental interpreters, public relations and publications staff, to provide information that effectively promotes conservation of Galapagos among local, national, and international audiences.

2. Plan, execute, and quantitatively evaluate the impact of activities in Environmental Education according to the Annual Operational Plan, particularly focused on: a. Quarantine Program for the Galapagos Islands b. Biodiversity and effects of introduced organisms in the Galapagos Islands c. Galapagos Marine Resources Reserve conservation d. Protection of Galapagos' native plants and animals

3. Supervise and train personnel and students in Environmental Education and Interpretation.

4. Supervise maintenance and improvement of collections: video, slides, photographs, and education library.

5. Advise and coordinate work closely with Ecuadorian institutions, especially the Galapagos National Park Service (GNPS), local schools, and social organizations, to carry out a communication strategy that effectively aids in conservation of Galapagos National Park and Marine Resources Reserve.

6. Write and coordinate production of proposals to obtain funding for the Environmental Education and Social Communication programs of CDRS.

7. Prepare educational and popular articles for national, international, and institutional publication, to promote and inform about research results and activities at CDRS.

8. Organize and participate in courses, seminars, workshops, and other training activities that build capacity at CDRS and GNPS.

Requirements

1. M.Sc. or Ph.D. in Environmental Education or Communication. Demonstrated experience in research and evaluation of environmental education programs, and successful proposal writing. Must be associated with a research institute or university in a European Union country.

2. Bilingual Spanish/English: excellent written and oral Spanish and English.

3. Two years work experience, preferably in Latin America; experience in supervision and administration of projects in social communication, and guidance of students.
