MORE MICRONUTRIENT DOCUMENTS

OMNI has available a limited number of older publications on various aspects of global micronutrient activities. Many of these documents were developed through the VITAL project. Although some are several years old, we feel that they still can provide important information to organizations, governments, projects and individuals involved in the elimination of micronutrient malnutrition globally. Every week we will make different documents available. They are available on a first come first serve base. ****************************************************************************** 1. ECONOMIC RATIONALE FOR INVESTING IN MICRONUTRIENT PROGRAMS

This is a USAID policy brief that gives dramatic new evidence that suggests that it is possible to accelerate the achievement of education, health and productivity goals in developing nations through the provision of vital nutrients to the population.

Investing in nutrition is an efficient use of resources not only because the enormous social and financial costs of malnutrition are averted, but also because improved nutrition has an enhancing effect on investments in other sectors such as health, education, and agriculture. Considering the wide array of low-cost solutions, a new imperative exists to support micronutrient programs. Available in English, French and Spanish 1995

2. UNITED NATIONS UPDATE ON THE NUTRITION SITUATION

A report complied from information available to the ACC/SCN and prepared in collaboration with the International Food Policy Research Institute in 1994

This Update focusses on trends in the early 1990's and the conclusion direct attention more strongly than ever towards Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia. It focuses on the rising concern for the nutrition of refugee and displaced populations, continues the process of integrating data from a variety of sources. Nutrition is regarded as an outcome, for which the main indicator is the prevalence of underweight preschool children. Infant mortality rates are also included. The indicators and text are clustered into topics related to food, health, and women's role in caring capacity, as underlying causes of malnutrition. In addition, the opportunity of greatly increased availability of nutritional trend data has been taken to compare these with economic growth rates, which both shows the important contribution of economic growth, and also emphasizes that substantial improvement in nutrition can be achieved over and above that explained by economic growth.

OMNI's mission is accomplished by developing integrated, comprehensive programs and strategies to reduce and eliminate major micronutrient deficiencies throughout the developing world. Participating countries are based on their micronutrient malnutrition problems, commitment by local officials (public and private) to micronutrient activities, and their capacity to achieve and sustain a demonstrable impact. ****************************************************************************** OMNI is located at 1616 North Fort Myer Dr., Suite 1100, Arlington, Virginia 22209 USA - Tel: 703 528-7474 - Fax: 703 528-7480 E-mail: mailto:omni_project@jsi.com--WWW: http://www.jsi.com/intl/omni/home ******************************************************************************
