First Announcement"International Symposium on Cooperation in Plasma Science and Technology"
September 16-18, 1996 The United Nations University Tokyo, Japan
Organized by Institute of Advanced Study, United Nations University, Tokyo Institute of Physics, University of Tsukuba, Tsukuba.
Chairperson: Tarcisio DellaSenta, United Nations University Co-Chairperson: Takaya Kawabe, University of Tsukuba
Scope of the Symposium
"Plasma is the fourth state of the matters" after solid state, liquid state and gaseous state. The scientific research on the plasma as the plasma physics has been carried out for more than 60 years. In the early days, the application of the plasma was directed to the telecommunication by use of the ionosphere (plasma produced by the ultraviolet radiation from the sun). Since the middle of the 1950s, controlled fusion research by confining the very hot plasma in a magnetic bottle or by use of the inertia of the fuel have been continued. From about 10 years ago, the broader application of the plasma has been started, and it includes modification of the surface of the solid, such as the hardening, anticorrosion, antifriction, deposition, etching, and formation of anti-refectory film on the surface of the plastic lens. This plasma technology is one of the fast growing technology in the world and provides opportunities for future development in various areas of applications.
This symposium serves as one of the satellite meetings of the International Conference on Plasma Physics (Nagoya in September 9-13, 1996) and will discuss e.g.: 1.Present status of plasma science and technology 2.Cooperation in plasma science and technology 3.Future directions and actions for cooperation in the transfer of plasma science and technology
Tentative Program The symposium consists of presentation of the papers and panel discussion.
Sept. 16, 1996 I. Opening II. Position paper combining various approaches from both developed countries and developing countries. - State of Arts of the plasma science and technology: present and future III. Present status of the cooperation and trends of activities IV. Reception at UNU
Sept. 17, 1996 V. Needs for science and technology cooperation and transfer VI. Panel discussion -prospects and planning for future cooperation. VII. Future directions and closing
Sept. 18, 1996 VIII. Scientific and Technical Tour Optional tour is arrange to visit scientific and technical research sites near Tokyo area.
A plan of action will be prepared during the Symposium to develop activities like post-graduate courses, exchange of researchers and networking.
Cooperation with other institutions of science and technology in the field of plasma and fusion technology is welcome.
Limited numbers of attendants from developing countries could be financially supported by this symposium.
