To list members,We are seeking to find out about small scale equipment for decortification of kenaf for this campesino project we are developing in Costa Rica and Mexico.
I know small scale kenaf decortification equipment was once developed in India, Nigeria and Tanzania. Can anyone give me those contacts?
THE KENAF CUT AND CARRY SYSTEM EcoAgroForestry based sustainable development is based heavily on the use of Kenaf and AgroResidue. The Kenaf Cut and Carry System is designed as an alternative to deforestation in the tropics. Kenaf will be produced in Tropical Cut and Carry Teams in villages as a beginning rural agroindustrial development program. In order to participate in the project, a Tropical Cut and Carry Team must be created, from 4-12 people in a village. Each Tropical Cut and Carry team will choose a Team Leader. Or the Team Leader can self select by being responsible for the payment of the Tropical Cut and Carry Team Project Fee. The team Leader will be expected to teach members of his/her team in the production of kenaf. We are seeking for this program. What Is The Tropical Cut and Carry Team Program All About?Tropical Cut and Carry Teams (TCCT) are designed as one of the win-win EcoAgroForestry Entrepreneurial strategies dedicated to bringing into the EcoAgroForestry World previously unserved populations. The rural peasants or small scale farmers need an entrepreneurial approach to rural development. Most small scale farmers migrate to the cities to seek employment. To prevent that, we have focused on sustainable rural agroindustrial development based on kenaf and AgroResidues . We have developed several high value systems such as and to provide employment in rural areas. However, VBI and RAIC projects are very likely to take some time to develop, and there is a need for a grassroots rural entrepreneurial program that will reach the small scale farmers.
WHAT IS A KEY REASONS FOR TCCT?
We need to stem the migration from rural areas to urban areas. This rural urban migration is putting too much pressure on the already overburdened cities. Why are the small scale farmers below migrating? They are seeking employment, a way to earn enough money to feed themselves and their families. This project is designed to stem this migration and enable people in rural areas to develop a sustainable money making enterprise by bringing together these technologies: a) Combining crop production with small-scale livestock raising, e.g., chickens, sheep or goats. All animals are to be confined and fed on a 'cut and carry' basis. If land is sloping or hillside, animal pens be located 50-60 percent of the way down the slope. Food crops are grown downslope from the animal confinement areas. Feedstuffs for livestock are grown upslope from the animal pens. b) The use of nitrogen fixing trees and shrubs and vetiver grass to act as the vegetation barrier crops. The barrier is periodically trimmed, with the nitrogen rich trimmings placed on adjacent soils in lieu of commercial nitrogen fertilizers. c) The use of vegetation planted at close spacing on the contours of a farmer's lands, allowing soil erosion between barriers to "naturally" form, over a number of years, terraces that in the long run conserve soil and water d) Utilizing kenaf as the basic livestock feed for animals and also using kenaf as a generator of additional income from selling the seeds on a buy back arrangement to the KGN e) Ancillary feeds for the cut and carry program will be buffel grass, elephant grass, tropical forage legumes and AgroResidues f) Extensive use of vetiver for soil erosion purposes and yield increases. Vetiver has been found to be useful in many countries for: There are twelve known varieties of vetiver grass, the most important is Vetiveria zizanioides. For centuries the oil extract from the roots of V.zizanioides has been used in the perfume trade. Indigenous peoples have recognized vetiver for its medicinal uses, for thatching, mulch, and feed, and for soil and moisture conservation. g) Planting a high diversity communal generations forest by a) collecting seeds or obtaining seeds through KGN, 2) setting up a tree nursery 3) growing and caring for the young seedlingsh) Planting a firewood plantation of Leucaena and giza sorghumi) Setting up a vetiver grass nurseryj) Be easily adaptable to hillside farming and actually serve as a land erosion preventive and soil builderk) Be entrepreneurial, sustainable and transferable to other similar farmers in the local area l) Provide a monetary incentive to team members to share the technologies, germplasm and other inputs they have received so diffusion is speeded up m) Utilize low tech methods of preserving feeds for non-productive times of yearThe Tropical Cut and Carry Teams (TCCT) will drive economic development based on creating employment from kenaf growing, processing and marketing. The Tropical Cut and Carry Teams are sponsored by the Kenaf Growers Network (KGN). In order to participate in a TCCT, 4-12 small scale farmers or other residents of a small community form a Special TCCT KGN group. Not all team members need to be living in the local community, one of the members can be living in a city or even in the United States. As a matter of fact, is it quite possible for the non-resident to provide the Program fee of US$5000 and form a team within his family or community. The TCCT agrees to work together to create a small scale kenaf based industry in their community, The TCCT will receive extensive Interactive Distance Consultancy from the KGN, including a special TCCT Interactive Distance learning Course. This special course is being developed for TCCTs only and will involve extensive learning activities in kenaf growing, kenaf seed production, small business management, kenaf industrialization, self esteem building, etc. Each group will adopt a distinctive logo, based on some historical event in the community. A logo will be developed for them and badges will be created for them to attach to their clothing. Training videos, audio cassettes, cartoon booklets, study cards, daily work shoots and other learning programs will be made available to the TCCT. The group will be licensed as a Kenaf Seed Producer Group. One of the member will be selected as the Team Leader or will self select if he/she takes the responsibility to bring the project to their community. That Team leader will be the contact person with the KGN. Once the group is organized, has paid it program fee, it will receive enough kenaf seed to plant 10 hectares of kenaf. Included in the project cost will be a chaff cutter for chopping kenaf, plans for kenaf dryer rack, plans for kenaf carriers and other kenaf equipment. PROFIT CENTERS FOR TCCTS Once the project fee has been paid, and the kenaf is planted, there will be many profit centers for the TCCT. These include but are not limited to: a) Marketing kenaf seeds to the KGN. A buy back agreement for kenaf seeds is included in the Program fee b) Production of livestock feed to sell in country c) Sourcing local products for export to KGN or EAFTDC d) Upgrading to a e) The most exciting potential for the group is that it can sponsor other groups to form TCCTs. HOW DOES A TCCT OTHER GROUPS WHAT DOES THE TCCT-1 GET WHEN THEY ENROLL AND PAY THE PROGRAM FEE Kenaf Seeds to plant 10 hectares( Team Leader controls division of seeds) Kenaf Production Handbooks (audio cassettes, picture books, study cards) Plans for building equipment Membership Charter as the Lead TCCT in their community IDL Course in developing the Kenaf Cut and Carry program Kenaf Seed Production Handbook Record Keeping set-up Interactive Distance Consultancy - mail, phone, fax and Internet Leadership Support Program Buy back Agreement for kenaf seeds Local sources for Vetiver Buffel grass seed for seed replication Leucaena seed for replication Local sources for Elephant grass or will ship them starts Giza sorghum seed for seed replication Membership in Kenaf Growers Network for all Team members Logo prepared for team Badges made up from Logo for all team members Invitation (half price enrollment coupons) to WesHemisphere Century Conference in San Pedro Sula, Honduras in September 1997 Chaff cutter for cutting kenaf Plans for kenaf carrier
