1996 Overseas Summer Course in International Development

Coordinated by the University of Saskatchewan International and World University Service of Canada - a CIDA funded initiative -

The University of Saskatchewan and World University Service of Canada (WUSC) is pleased to announce the 1996 Overseas Summer Course in Interdisciplinary Studies: the Theory and Practice of Development to be held in Zimbabwe. A six-credit course will be offered over nine weeks in Zimbabwe from July 2 - August 30, 1996 with an orientation at WUSC- Ottawa from June 26 - 28, 1996. Credit will be awarded by the University of Saskatchewan and will be situated in a programme designed in conjunction with the WUSC-Zimbabwe field office. An observation placement in Zimbabwe forms part of the course and allows participants to link theory with an organization in their area of interest (environment, women, etc.).

Application deadline is January 22, 1996 so apply now!

Each eligible participant must:

- have completed three years of a four-year undergraduate programme - include the course in the student's current degree requirements - return to home university for the 1996-97 academic year to complete remaining courses for the degree - be a Canadian citizen or landed immigrant - be medically fit.

Each application should include:

- a letter indicating student's field of specialization and year in programme, how the proposed course would fit into the student's programme, what observation placements are preferred (i.e. environment, women's studies, children, etc.), how the student intends to disseminate the experience within the community and academic institution, and any other information which would make the applicant suitable for inclusion in such a course - a transcript of the student's academic work to date - a detailed rsum - a minimum of two letters of reference - including one academic reference from a faculty member, or other appropriate individual, and at least one personal reference commenting on the student's suitability for participation.

Each participant agrees to:

- pay the University of Saskatchewan appropriate fees for admission and enrolment in the course by May 4, 1996 and to have completed the registration process prior to arrival in Ottawa - to pay for all travel costs between the participant's home to Ottawa and between Canada and Zimbabwe; ensuring that arrival and departure dates coincide with pre-departure orientation in Ottawa - to submit end-of-course evaluation prior to leaving Zimbabwe - to submit rsums with applications to assist in the matching of observation placements - upon return to Canada, conduct a minimum of three outreach events either on campus or in the surrounding community.
