On 20 November Nuffic/CIRAN launched its first Internet Hunt, for information regarding socio-economic aspects and the political and/or cultural situation in developing countries. This first challenge was a trial run--to see if it works. And to see if there are people out there who also think it's a good idea.
WHAT CAN YOU LEARN FROM THE HUNT
You haven't seen the hunt yet? No problem, you can look at it right now to find out what the questions were and the answers given. The Internet Hunt was very instructive. It's an attractive way to learn more about the Internet and the places where you can find information dealing with your discipline.
This first hunt was a valuable experience. Also for us. We learned a lot by formulating our questions and by checking the search strategies the contestants had used to find the anwers.
There seem to be people out there who really enjoyed it. Maarten van der Heijden wrote that he himself has been looking for some time for interesting development-related sites. Linda Schieber of the UNDP in New York said she thought "it was a most interesting exercise." We had made only a modest attempt to publicize the hunt, placing it on a few mailing lists, but Jim Harold from the INDIX list forwarded our Hunt to more than 100 persons on his own e-mail list. We really appreciated these responses.
NEW QUESTIONS WELCOME
The next HUNT will be sometime in the middle of January. If you have thought of any good Hunt questions, please don't hesitate to send them to us. They are very welcome. Maybe your question will be in our next Hunt (with your name on it).
If you have any suggestions of any kind (for example regarding the way the Hunt is distributed or presented) or if you have any points of criticism, these too are most welcome.
