Here are the possibilities

1. former colony --> third world 2. former colony --> developed nation 3. never a colony --> third world 4. never a colony --> developed nation

The hypothesis is that number 1 is always the case. People are citing examples of number 2 to refute the hypothesis. How about some discussion of numbers 3 and 4.....that way it will appear that we are trying to understand rather than blame or defend.

And we can add some more possibilities.

5. former colonial power --> third world 6. former colonial power --> developed nation 7. former colonists --> third world 8. former colonists --> developed nation
