"WELCOME TO GENDER-CG: THE NETWORK ON INTRAHOUSEHOLD AND GENDER ASPECTS OF FOOD AND AGRICULTURAL RESEARCH

This EMAIL network is being set up to provide mutual support and encouragement to researchers working on gender and intrahousehold issues at CG centers, NARS, and related NGOS involved in food and agricultural policy. The objectives of the network are to:

establish a dialogue among often isolated 'gender social scientists' in CG centers and NARs;

help keep each other up to date with developments in the intrahousehold and gender literature (which are often in the hard-to-get 'gray literature', and other publications outside academic or refereed articles);

connect the researchers with a wider intrahousehold and gender literature;

draw other interested social scientists within the CG and NARs into the network;

send a signal to donors that the CG is acting on its stated priorities on gender and intrahousehold issues.

Ruth Meinzen-Dick and Lynn Brown of IFPRI are the coordinators of this effort, but the network is set up so that every participant communicates directly with all the other members of the network.

Many of you have already responded to our survey on interest in a gender-related EMAIL network. Responses came from 12 centers, indicating a strong level of interest. Agricultural Economists were the largest discipline represented, but there are also other social scientists (sociologists, anthropologists, geographers), and representatives from nutrition, plant breeding, and outreach (training, public awareness, and information sciences).

******************************************************* DIRECTIONS FOR SENDING MESSAGES *******************************************************

Corresponding with the network is quite easy. Simply send a regular EMAIL message addressed to mailto:GENDER-CG@CGNET.COM

Your message will be sent out automatically to all other members of the network. Most should receive it by the next working day.

There is no fixed format for the messages. They could include:

questions for general or specific discussion;

information on ongoing or new activities (your own or others);

new publications or other literature of interest (self- promotion of your own work is encouraged);

discussion of issues (such as methodologies, strategies, examples of links between gender and centers' research or outreach activities);

requests for help in locating information;

other types of messages.

The only current limitation is that we ask you to keep messages relatively brief, because many of the centers pay fairly high costs to receive EMAIL. If you want to send longer messages, especially with full papers or data sets, you are encouraged to make the contacts through GENDER-CG, and then send the full message to selected individuals who request it.

PLEASE NOTE: You cannot use the "reply-to" function to reply to the list. The return path "GENDER-CG-postmaster" routes messages to the CGNET postmaster, not to the list. To send a message to the list,you will need to manually enter the e-mail address mailto:GENDER-CG@CGNET.COM

************************************************************** DIRECTIONS FOR SUBSCRIBING ADDITIONAL MEMBERS **************************************************************

If you received this message by EMAIL, you have already been subscribed.

Your colleagues at CG centers or NARs who are interested in gender issues are most welcome to subscribe. To do so, they should simply send a message to mailto:LISTSERV@CGNET.COM.

The text of the message should have the following on the first line (and nothing else in the body of the message):

SUBSCRIBE GENDER-CG

Whenever anyone subscribes, it would be helpful if they would send the following information in a message to mailto:L.BROWN@CGNET.COM:

Full name: Organization: Title: Mailing address: Telephone number: Field/Area of specialty: (e.g. Economics, Anthropology, Communications)

We also encourage all new subscribers to send a brief message on the network introducing themselves, with particular interests or research in this area.

If you do not start receiving messages within a few days, send a message to mailto:L.BROWN@CGNET.COM and we will make sure you are subscribed.

To remove yourself from the list, send a message to mailto:LISTSERV@CGNET.COM with the text

UNSUBSCRIBE GENDER-CG

To receive the list of addressees on this list, send a message to mailto:LISTSERV@CGNET.COM with the text
