I am aware that among the Mormons, for instance, any discussion (especially within a family) is regarded as dissention. Dissention -- also called "murmuring" -- is regarded as a great evil. This supports the dominance of aged males, and entirely prevents the development of any skill at discussing (or arguing) issues openly with others, even putative community members.
I'm sorry if I trod on your corns, Bob, but I didn't know Devel-L dogma had set so rigidly. In any case, perhaps in future we can refrain from talking too high and mighty about the errors of others' ways, and *expand the discussion of a topic rather than shut it down, OK?
