Hello,

John will send a reply soon to my most on property with a well structured presentation of how patents can benefit to patients (the message came to me but should appear to DEVEL-L shortly).

I thought I should mention that this list is apparently not moderated and that we define toguether its scope.

As a chemist, I am a strong supporter of state funded research and I believe that a part of Western research grants should be attributed to developing countries in order to avoid a disbalance of resources.

After all, developing countries also have talented scientists. I mentioned earlier Luruma Zirimwa Bagabo, an AIDS-specialist of Kinshasa and who collaborated with Dr. Zagury in 1986 for the test on the AIDS-vaccine (he also tried to develop a retro-virus substance); or Dr. Suman Shai in India who works on biodiversity, see the review of Carine PIONETTI "semences et savoirs en Inde" ISBN 2-913059-01-5, Fondation Charles Léopold Mayer (1999). I am just mentioning two names from memory to examplify. We need to co-operate with developing countries, not just look at them as merely consumers of Western knowledge.

I received two messages of support for which I'd like to express my gratitute.

Thanks to John for his reply as well:-)
