Ohio University's interdisciplinary program in Communication and Development Studies is designed to meet the needs of individuals interested in the utilization of information systems and communication processes to promote national and regional development. The framework is the Master of Arts in International Affairs (MAIA) degree, created in 1964 to provide a focus for the extensive international commitments of Ohio University. The program is jointly administered through the School of Telecommunications and the Center of International Studies.

Rather than expecting students to simply learn and adopt established theories, premises, methods and practices, the program emphasizes training that allows students to develop unique approaches to using information and communication in development. The degree incorporates several areas of individual specialization created by the students to suit their own needs and interests, examples of which include communication campaigns, tropical disease prevention, multi-media production. Faculty members are actively involved in research projects in Africa, Asia, CIS, and Baltic Republics, Latin America, and in the United States. Typically, two thirds of students come from outside the United States and represent all areas of the world.

The Communications and Development Studies Program has a flexible curriculum which allows students to enroll in courses offered by various schools and departments across the University. The curriculum is divided into concentrations of Communication, Geographic Area Studies, Individual Specialization, Development, and Research Tools. A student must also complete an internship/field study and demonstrate proficiency in a language applicable to the geographic area of study. Students normally require two years to complete the 90 credit hour minimum.

The Center for International Studies offers interdisciplinary programs in African, Latin American, and Southeast Asian Studies as well as Development Studies. Approximately 200 graduate students are enrolled in these programs. The endeavors of the Center are founded on the broad belief that an appreciation of different values and institutions increases understanding between people, enriches the lives of individuals, and assists in forming opinions on issues which affect the world community.

Persons interested in applying for admission to the program must have a bachelor's degree with a minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, or 7.5 on a 10 point scale. Applicants should also have a background in communication, development or related areas. In order to fulfill the requirements for application the following materials should be received before March 31.
