Subject: Survey on Ethics of Development

As part of a course examining the ethics of development we have been
asked to prepare a code of ethics for development pratitioners. In
order to make this code relevant to the types of morally problematic
situations encountered in development work, we would like to survey
individuals with direct experience in development practice or
research who have encountered moral dilemmas (deception,
manipulation, violation of trust, coercion, exploitation, inequitable
treatment etc.). We are grateful for any response and would
appreciate it if those of you who respond would be as detailed as
as confidentiality allows regarding the case in point. It is
anticipated that these situations might provide the basis for applied
ethics cases in the future. Please be assured that confidentiality
will be respected in all cases. We are not interested in the
personalities or agencies involved in the case, only in the moral
problem and how it was, or was not, resolved. If you can be of
assistance in any way, please reply directly to us, providing a
background or context for the problem (where, what, why, when) and to
the extent possible, describe the personalities involved, the nature
of the moral dilemma and the sequence of choices or decisions applied
(if any) in an attempt to resolve the problem. If you are willing,
please add your personal reflections on this process.

Also, if you are familiar with any existing codes of ethics or standards of practice that have a focus on development work or have been established by development organizations we would like to hear about them.

Thanks in advance for your co-operation. Please pardon any cross-listing of this post and if members would like, a summation of responses and the final product can be posted to this list.
