Native Healers Tapping into their knowledge
Hear ye, hear ye, Alaska Native traditional healers: A first-ever call for help id headed your way from the nation's capital. The director of the federal Indian Health Service, Dr. Michael Trujillo, is coming north. He wants Native Healers to offer ideas on how Indian Health Services can meld traditional and western medicine.
Contrary to a long-standing federal IHS policy, most Indian patients across the country directly served by he IHS--including Alaska-- do not have traditional healing services available to the,.
Here in Alaska and nationally, IHS is now starting to ask key questions like "Who are the traditional healers?" and "Just what is traditional medicine? To his credit, Dr. Trujillo seems intent on bringing IHS up to speed on traditional practices and practitioners.
A Sunday gathering at the University of Alaska will herald a three-day conference on traditional healing and contemporary medicine. Wednesday, the IHS director will meet privately with healers to discuss their recommendations on how IHS should address traditional medicine in its operations. Dr. Trujillo's office also plans to assemble by early summer a committee of traditional healers from across the country to advise him. With so many physical and spiritual woes afflicting America's indigenous populations, it's more than time to turn to the Native's traditional healers for guidance.
By all appearances, it looks like IHS is finally going to meet its mandate under Dr. Trujillo's stewardship and provide patients with more culturally appropriate services, including traditional medicine.
Welcome to Alaska, doctor.
