I'm a believer of the assumption about people which says that "People can be purposeful and have ideals in the RIGHT environment"

You are quite right when you say that: "Economics, culture, religion, status of women, tradition, all these play a role" and also when you say :" people need to be better informed of those alternatives and their consequences".
