Dear JC,I am not convinced that the reason peasants have a lot of children is only because they 'have no alternative.' In fact, demographers spend an awful lot of time trying to figure out just what does influence a couple's fertility. Economics, culture, religion, status of women, tradition, all these play a role. I would hope htat there are always alternatives, but that people need to be better informed of those alternatives and their consequences.
