Dear List Members I have recently received a project proposal from a Vernon Fisher in Soweto, South Africa, for the fitting out of computer facilities for disabled people. I have included the introduction to the proposal below. If any members are interested in contributing to a cause which appears to have considerable merit, please contact the project manager at mailto:vfisher@gjtmc.org.za for more details. Regards Terence Kelly South Africa "Unfortunately, many physically disabled people have been unable to gain experience beyond sewing, basket weaving and other less mentally challenging undertakings. This was caused by a lack of exposure to more professional job markets due to immobility and the failure in the past to make buildings accessible to the disabled. The recently approved (South African) Employment Equity Bill calls for the inclusion of a certain percentage of Physically Challenged personnel in the labour market. There is therefore an urgent need to create job opportunities for these people, many of who have adequate educational qualifications such as senior certificate and tertiary qualifications.
The SHAP centre in Soweto currently provides employment for physically challenged people but due to limited funding has been unable to provide more professional training and development.
A building was recently erected on the premises at SHAP Soweto by PORTNET and is intended for use as a computer training centre. Unfortunately there are no funds to furnish this building with the necessary equipment to conduct training."
