Initial Call for Expressions of Interest
Second Biennial Aotearoa New Zealand International
Development Studies Network (DEVNET) Conference
Poverty, Prosperity, Progress
17-19th November 2000
Victoria University of Wellington, Wellington
Aotearoa/New Zealand
Hosted by the Masters of Development Studies Programme,
Victoria University of Wellington and DEVNET
Conference Focus
Poverty is difficult to define, measure, monitor and
alleviate, especially across and within different social
groups and cultures. This conference provides an
opportunity for participants to analyse and reflect upon
the relationships between poverty and development in
Aotearoa/New Zealand and overseas, and to share experiences
and lessons from addressing poverty, prosperity and progress
in different places. The conference seeks to link local
and global wisdom and practice to foster new visions and
approaches towards poverty alleviation and self-determination.
Specifically, by learning from successful alternatives we
hope to challenge mainstream conceptions of prosperity and
progress and allow for more creative synergies between
government, business, NGOs and civil society.
Key Themes
Three broad themes corresponding to the title have been
developed to stimulate thought and encourage connections
across the conference.
o Poverty - Exploring the parameters of poverty from
varying perspectives and identifying common issues and lessons.
o Prosperity - Recognising and measuring the health,
wealth and wellbeing of societies.
o Progress - Envisioning socially and environmentally
responsible and diverse futures.
Participation invited from;
NGO workers, consultants, business people, government
employees, voluntary agency workers, community workers,
artists, activists, volunteers, policy makers, planners,
teachers, academics and postgraduate students.
