The deal, valued at $60 million, will be financed by France, ONE said. The announcement was made shortly before a planned visit by new French President Jacques Chirac, during which several economic cooperation projects were expected to be finalized.
ONE said the windfarm is part of a larger strategy of developing renewables to reduce dependence on imported oil and on hydropower, which can be negatively affected by droughts. The new windfarm, it said, would displace 46,000 tons of oil annually for a yearly savings of $10 million.
