- Which R&D centres around the world are involved in biomass-fired
  power generation?
- Where can I find leading suppliers of wind turbines?
- Which information centres can inform me about energy conservation in
  the dairy industry?
- Where do I find information about the effectiveness of investment
  grants and other policy instruments?

These and other questions about technology sources are often raised by policy planners, decision makers and energy managers in government and industry. They are usually engaged in research, development, transfer or deployment of new or renewable energy technologies. To help answer such questions, the International Energy Agency (IEA) and the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) have established the Greenhouse Gas Technology Information Exchange (GREENTIE).

GREENTIE operates a worldwide Directory database containing suppliers of equipment and expertise in the field of greenhouse gas mitigating technologies, especially new and renewable energy technologies. The Directory's main technology categories include fossil fuel technologies, renewables, industrial end-use, building and transportation technologies, and agricultural and forestry practices.

The GREENTIE Directory is available through the WWW, on CD-ROM, on diskette and in print. All GREENTIE information is provided free of charge. Those who have Internet access can consult the Directory at http://www.greentie.org. Other enquirers may contact GREENTIE's Enquiry Service by contacting GREENTIE Centre in the Netherlands, see below.

GREENTIE's background

GREENTIE was set up in response to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (FCCC). Under the FCCC, more than 150 countries agreed to limit their greenhouse gas emissions, and to help curb emissions in other countries. All these countries have undertaken to cooperate in the development, application, diffusion and transfer of greenhouse gas mitigating technologies.

At present 32 countries, both IEA/OECD member and non-member countries, participate in GREENTIE. They feel that a joint facility for exchanging information is the most effective way to meet their technology related Convention commitments. All participating countries have established a GREENTIE Liaison Office, which promotes and distributes the GREENTIE Directory nationally.

Contents of the GREENTIE Directory

The GREENTIE Directory contains information about 8000 suppliers of technologies and expertise for greenhouse gas mitigation, 90% of which do not have a WWW site. In other words, you won't find these organisations on the Internet, unless you check out GREENTIE's homepage.

Greenhouse gas mitigating technologies are defined as `all technologies, practices and processes that control, reduce or prevent the emissions of man-made greenhouse gases'.

All organisations in the Directory are described in accordance with a specific format, consisting of three sections: - Contact information, e.g., contact person, phone, fax, e-mail, www, turnover and number of employees; - Organisation profile, including the organisation's mission, technical expertise, products or services and target groups; - Classification.

The Directory's selective retrieval mechanism allows searches on technology area, type of organisation, products or services, target groups by industry and by geographic area, and even on the development stage of the technology involved, e.g. R&D stage or commercial application. The retrieval mechanism also includes a free text search option. The uniform description of the organisations and the advanced retrieval system makes it easy to retrieve, compare, select and contact relevant technology sources.
