How science is used in no way changes the underlying science. Would you have preferred the lackeys to use a different argument to achieve the same ends?
But I think you have it backwards, the "limits" was and is attacked by mainstream power holders because it can be used to force a debate on redistribution of wealth.
I the "oppressed" accept mainstream illusions that growth can continue forever (obviously it can't), then they can never have that debate.
