colleagues who would like to become involved, or civic/corporate
organizations which might provide points of contact.

The Productivity Enhancement Program

American citizens have an opportunity to assist private-sector
development in Russia and Ukraine.
The Productivity Enhancement Program (PEP) is an intensive train-
ing program created to increase Russian and Ukrainian domestic
production. Russian and Ukrainian entrepreneurs are brought to
the U.S. for month-long training programs to acquire information
on management skills, methods of production and new technologies.
This is a unique opportunity for fledgling Russian and Ukrainian
business people to learn how to function in a free market econo-
my, and to gain hands-on experience in many aspects of running
their own companies.
American volunteers can assist PEP by becoming regional coordina-
tors, enlisting local civic clubs (Rotary, Kiwanis, Lions, etc.)
to sponsor Russian delegations to their communities, volunteering
their companies as training sites for the Russian manufacturers,
or identifying corporate contacts for CCI.
PEP concentrates on manufacturers involved in food processing,
clothing, construction, health, and other consumer-related pro-
ducts. The program's principal goal is to increase production to
build grassroots economic and political stability.
PEP is one of several foreign assistance programs run by the
Center for Citizen Initiatives, a non-profit agency devoted to
the development and advancement of "agents of change" in the
countries of the former Soviet Union. The Center was established
in 1983, and has since run education, training, internship and
consulting programs with that goal in mind. We are located in
San Francisco, but conduct programs throughout the United States.
