in reply to this much-copied scrap of a message I had imported from another list:

Of course this looks ironically out-of-place amid discourse about "what do WE need" and whether or not to blame "capitalism" and how much energy and bandwidth to expend on which passionate argument. I tossed it in, perhaps mischievously, to illustrate further the diversity of the "development" conversation, only a fragment of which is happening here. As we debate who controls capitalism, for example, it may be helpful to remember that the guy trying to sell his sugar acres in Mtunzini, South Africa, to US "developers" is part of a global conversation carried on just as earnestly as this one. My inquiry to you: How to make appropriate connections? How to engage in productive cross-cultural dialogue once we're connected?
Important stuff on this list! I'll go back to being mostly a quiet observer.
