One thing about eating clams and oysters is the connections--our past and a misty, cold sea murmering about death and mysteries beyond our imagining. It's memeories, too, like when you glance at the growing pile of empty shells and recall the middens we used to raise, back when the city dump was our front yard and kitchen all in one. There are anticipations, also, knowing that one day, when trees are pushing out the broken windows of the Chrysler Building, we will be back at the edge of the sea, living on its uncaring bounty. Both past and future run cold saltwater around our ankles. We smell the salt and life and feel the gritty, wet sand.
