***************************************************************************** 1. ANEMIA DETECTION IN HEALTH SERVICES: GUIDELINES FOR PROGRAM MANAGERS
Iron deficiency is the most common micronutrient deficiency in the world and has far-reaching and serious adverse effects on health. Anemia detection is often used as a screening test for iron deficiency. Because the condition is so widespread, anemia control activities should be an integral part of health care services. These guidelines are intended to help program managers establish anemia detection services or enhance existing services. They include a general overview of the programmatic issues of anemia screening to provide a context for method choice. Existing commonly available anemia detection methods are presented in a standardized format to help managers make apropriate decisions regarding technology selection.
This book was published by PATH, the Program for Appropriate Technology in Health, and funded by USAID. Second edition (December 1996) reprints were made possible through the OMNI Project. This publication is free of charge and copies available in English through OMNI (see below for contact information). ----------------------- 2. PROMOTING THE GROWTH OF CHILDREN: WHAT WORKS
"Promoting the Growth of Children: What Works," by Marcia Griffiths, Kate Dickin, and Michael Favin, has recently been published by the World Bank as Tool #4 in its Nutrition Toolkit series. The purpose of the Toolkit is to help World Bank staff design and supervise effective and feasible nutrition projects, as well as carry out comprehensive analysis of sectoral and policy issues affecting food consumption and nutrition. This paper discusses growth promotion activities as components of successful community nutrition projects with emphasis on how to design and implement programs that maximize the potential offered by the growth promotion package in nutrition and primary health care programs.

****************************************************************************** OPPORTUNITIES FOR MICRONUTRIENT INTERVENTIONS (OMNI) is funded by the Office of Health and Nutrition of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) in Washington, D.C. and managed by John Snow, Inc. OMNI's mission is accomplished by developing integrated, comprehensive programs and strategies to reduce and eliminate major micronutrient deficiencies throughout the developing world. Participating countries are based on their micronutrient malnutrition problems, commitment by local officials (public and private) to micronutrient activities, and their capacity to achieve and sustain a demonstrable impact. ****************************************************************************** OMNI is located at 1616 North Fort Myer Dr, Suite 1100, Arlington, Virginia 22209 USA Tel: 703 528-7474 - Fax: 703 528-7480 E-mail: mailto:omni_project@jsi.com WWW: http://www.jsi.com/intl/omni/home ******************************************************************************
