Journalists and Others To Discuss Role of Media In Mexico's Political Transition

There was no Berlin Wall to fall in Mexico, but the political transition underway in our neighbor to the south is just as dramatic as those in Eastern Europe in the 1980s. For the first time in 70 years, the Institutional Revolutionary Party has lost its absolute majority in Congress and an opposition mayor runs Mexico City as of last Dec. 1.

Rarely is the news media's role in political transitions analyzed nor do journalists often take time to discuss how they would like their profession to act in a new democracy. However, the Center for Latin American Studies at Tulane University has organized a one-day conference in which distinguished Mexican journalists, along with academics, educators, legal experts and human rights activists, will do just that. The conference is free and open to the public.

For more information, contact Sallie Hughes at mailto:shughes1@mailhost.tcs.tulane.edu. The conference program follows.
