Assistant/Associate Professor Natural Resources Conservation Field of Study Space Technology Applications & Research Program School of Environment, Resources and Development
The Asian Institute of Technology (AIT), founded in 1959, is an autonomous, international institution of post- graduate studies offering post - graduate degree and non- degree certificate programs in engineering, related sciences, technologies, planning and management through its four Schools, three Academic and four Outreach Centers.
The Institute’s Space Technology Applications & Research Program (STAR) is seeking a faculty member at the level of Assistant/Associate Professor in the following areas of specialization:
Tropical terrestrial and coastal ecology, tropical forestry and agroforestry, watershed development, biodiversity (including protected areas) conservation, research design in natural resources and environmental conservation
Currently, the STAR Program consists of two fields of study: Remote Sensing & Geographic Information Systems (RS/GIS) and Natural Resources Conservation (NRC). The successful applicant will be expected to contribute to the academic activities of both fields of study as well as to other relevant fields of study in the School of Environment, Resources and Development (such as Agricultural and Aquatic Systems and Regional and Rural Development Planning). Job Description: The successful applicant will work as a full-time faculty member in the Program and be responsible for the following:
To teach three graduate-level 3-credit courses per year (one course per term). These courses include research design and data analysis methods, tropical terrestrial and coastal ecosystems, and tropical forestation and agroforestry. To guide and supervise student research at master’s and doctoral degree levels. To undertake research individually or in collaboration with other faculty members of the Program and school, and to develop and conduct short courses and other training activities To participate in the academic administration of the program . Qualifications and Experience: The applicant must possess the following qualifications and experience:
Formal educational background in the natural resources and environmental conservation field, especially related to tropical terrestrial and/or coastal resources and ecosystems, forestry, agroforestry and other allied fields (in terms of a Master’s degree and Ph.D. degree relating to the aforementioned focal areas in the natural resources and environmental conservation field). Considerable teaching, research and outreach experience and background in natural resources conservation - related fields, coupled with a good understanding of the potential use of spatial information technology (e.g., remote sensing and geographic information systems) for natural resource and environmental applications Excellent track record in publications such as articles in internationally refereed journals and books
Language: As the working language of the Institute is English, the applicant must be fluent in both spoken and written English.
Duration and Term of Appointment: The initial appointment is for two years, with the possibility of extension. The appointment will be made at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor, depending upon qualifications and professional experience.
Salary and Other Financial Entitlements: The salary is commensurate with qualifications, experience and academic rank at the time of appointment. Income tax is paid by the Institute to the Royal Thai Government. Faculty members and the Institute contribute 5 per cent and 10 per cent, respectively, of the base salary to the Insured Savings Fund. Faculty members also receive 20 per cent of their base salary as housing allowance. Substantial support for their childrens’ school fees in attending select international schools in Bangkok is also provided. There is entitlement to a settlement grant equal to 10 per cent of their base salary and economy-class airfare for themselves and their dependents as well as to certain duty-free privileges during the period of appointment.
Leave: Annual leave is granted at the rate of two days a month and can be accumulated up to 48 days. Faculty members are entitled to sabbatical leave after satisfactory completing four years of service; such leave can be accumulated up to six months on the basis of one month per year of service. Faculty members may also undertake professional consultancy equivalent to 20 per cent of their time per month with formal approval from the Institute.
Date of Appointment: AIT needs to fill this position as soon as possible but not later than May 1998.
