Some list members may be interested in Civic Education Program
(CEP) lecturing opportunities in Central and Eastern Europe
(CEE) and countries of the former Soviet Union (FSU). A shorter
version of this announcement was posted to the list on 16 Novem-
ber. But the attached announcement provides more information. I
have provided the current call for candidates. The announcement
includes a pointer to the Application Form, which I have con-
firmed.

For list members not familiar with CEP, I have attached a brief profile of the organization at the end of the announcement. Please note that there are no citizenship requirements for the Visiting Lecturer Program. CEE/FSU list members who have earned western degrees may want to note the Eastern Scholar Program section of the profile. ***************************************************************** Civic Education Project: Visiting Lecturer Program in CEE/FSU ***************************************************************** The Civic Education Program (CEP) is now accepting applications for its Visiting Lecturer Program. CEP is a private, voluntary educational organization dedicated to assisting reform efforts at universities throughout Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) and the former Soviet Union (FSU).

CEP Visiting Lecturers teach (in English) courses in the Social Sciences, and assist host academic departments in the CEE/FSU with curriculum development and outreach projects. Assignments are for one academic year - but Visiting Lecturers who excel may be eligible to renew the assignment for up to three years. CEP lecturers receive a living stipend, round-trip airfare and west- ern health insurance.

Applications must be postmarked no later than February 1, 1998.

The five-page application form is available electronically by pointing your web browser to:

CEP accomplishes this goal by developing partnerships with universities and institutions of higher education throughout the region.

For the 1997-1998 program year, we placed 137 Western-trained scholars in teaching and development positions in Albania, Be- larus, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Kazakstan, Kyrgyzstan, Latvia, Lithuania, Macedonia, Moldova, Poland, Roma- nia, Russia, Slovakia, Ukraine, and Uzbekistan. In addition to their classroom teaching, CEP Fellows engage in a wide variety of outreach activities, including curriculum revision and library development projects, the organization of faculty retraining seminars and the sponsoring of academic conferences for students and faculty colleagues.

Those who are interested in applying for our Visiting Lecturer program should have a PhD or advanced graduate degree in Art History, Anthropology, Economics, History, International Rela- tions, Law, Library Science, Public Administration, Political Science or Sociology. Applicants should also have teaching ex- perience. Those who have lived abroad are favored. ----------------------------------------------------------------- Eastern Scholar Program ----------------------------------------------------------------- CEP is also accepting applications for the Eastern Scholar pro- gram for the 1998-99 academic year. The Eastern Scholar program supports outstanding scholars from Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union who have obtained a graduate degree at a Western university and desire to return permanently to an academic post in their home countries. CEP assists Eastern Scholars to rees- tablish relations with their former universities and provides a modest stipend, some teaching materials, and access to CEP acade- mic programs and events.
