The World Wildlife Fund - US (WWF) (headquartered in Washington, D.C.) the world's largest private conservation organization with 4.7 million supporters, a global network active in more than 100 countries, and an annual budget greater than $70 million; seeks a Director for its People and Conservation Program (P&C). WWF's three principal program goals are to conserve endangered spaces; safeguard the endangered species that inhabit them; and address global threats to biodiversity such as timber trade and climate changes. The P&C Director will lead a team of social scientists participating in the formulation of strategies to address social, political and economic factors affecting the conservation of 25 of the 200 "ecoregions" WWF has identified worldwide. The ecoregion approach is a priority for WWF: It focuses on conserving the biodiversity of large landscapes or regions, and encourages people to think, plan, and act across political boundaries. P&C, along with the Conservation Science and Education programs, is part of the Department of Research and Development, a technical assistance unit that helps develop and promote innovative approaches and strengthens WWF's capacity to carry out conservation efforts. P&C provides social science support to WWF's regional offices that are planning and implementing programs in specific ecoregions, such as the Bering Sea, the Congolean Coastal forests and the Northern Andes. An unusual opportunity to establish a worldwide reputation. The P&C Director will focus on integrating the social sciences with conservation science, thereby advancing WWF's capacity to support sustainable development on the part of governments, individuals, and the private sector at local, national, regional and global levels. The Director must: (a) manage a team of interdisciplinary experts; (b) work collegially in complex situations; and (c) negotiate across political, disciplinary, and cultural divides. An adroit risk-taker able to create a program vision with vivid communication and persuasion skills vital. Candidates must demonstrate previous success managing multi-disciplinary programs involving socio-economic development and conservation. The Director is responsible for expanding the P&C program into macroeconomics, and policy and institutional reform in support of biodiversity. Capacity to function effectively with Board, staff, natural scientists, the NGO community, academic institutions, the business community, World Bank, USAID, and the public essential. Must be experienced with grant proposal writing. MA or PhD level candidates only. Strong academic and professional background in one or more of the social or natural sciences related to ecoregion-based conservation and socio-economic development important. Candidates in Natural Resource Management, Geography, Natural Resource Economics, Development Economics, Political Science, welcomed. Background working in the developing world in conservation and socio-economic development a must. Fluency in either Spanish or French desirable. Willingness to travel stateside and overseas 15% of the time is required. Supervises a staff of four senior professionals and manages a budget of $1 mil.
