Dear Friends,

A friend of mine, Luiza, works directly with food security programs in Brasilia, and she has won a prize from the Food and Agriculture Organization - FAO, for her work, to visit the United States during a month to visit food security programs in the US. Of course, there is not hunger in the US, but anyway there are some projects to help the American poor families to improve their nutrition.

She plans to travel next April, but she doesn't know where are the projects that worth to be visited.

I suppose that Beth Outterson could help her, informing about AFOP's initiatives, mainly those related to nutrition and education. I remember that Julie Christ - from Partners of the Americas DC chapter - told me, in 95, about a project in DC area that visit restaurants and stores to pick up the vegetables still in conditions to be eaten but not to be sold, and take them to the homeless. Now there are some NGOs and people doing the same here. I am sure she will find new good ideas if you could help her, please.

She needs to show a minimal travel schedule to FAO, but she doesn't have anything yet. I know she will visit DC area, but where else? Could you help us to include other cities in her travel plan? Good projects on food security and nutrition for the poor that could be replicated or adapted in Brazil?

Thank you, thank you very much for any information that could help Luiza to take full advantage from this opportunity. Just a small problem: Luiza cannot speak good English, but she is very good in Spanish. Anyway, she will study English hard during the next three months.

Your friend in Brazil, Joaquim
