<pre> There are several "internet telephony" systems, one of them is "free".
(The do have an ad banner in the operating window, but it's one ad at a time, and sent at slow data rate so it doesn't interfere with the call.)

It's the service I use. I do not, repeat do not, have any financial interest in the company. I used it first with an old Soundblaster 16, half duplex sound card. It was a little choppy, but no worse than a cell phone on the fringe. When talking to ham (amateur radio) friends, we used the Push To Talk (PTT) function. PTT eliminated some confusion, but is not the best method for everyone. The delay runs about a quarter to a half second, like an overseas call via satellite. I use this service to talk regularly with friend in Denver and Philadelphia. The drawback is that the service works only from computer to compter, and does not have an internet to telephone line partner. Their URL is: www.really-easy.net.

An alternative, which I haven't tried on my computer are a couple of products by Quicknet, the Phone Jack, and the Line Jack. The Phone Jack is a card and software to connect a regular telephone to your computer, the Line Jack is a card and software to connect your PBX to your computer. I've talked to a Phone Jack, via an internet telephony company. Almost perfect between San Francisco and northern NJ via the internet and northern NJ to southern NJ where I live via the normal phone lines. Their software will work independently between Phone/Line Jack users, and to regular telephones via internet to phone line interfacing companies like Net2Phone for a per minute fee. Their URL is: http://www.quicknet.net.

A cautionary note about sending your email address to another email address. There is a danger that a known good address, yours, will be sold or traded to a list, subjecting you to possibly unwanted or inappropriate mail. I be less concerned if a web site was given. That can be checked using "whois".
