Dear colleagues,I am writing on behalf of a research team, led by Dr. Dan Kammen, here at Princeton University's Woodrow Wilson School and the Center for Energy and Environmental Studies. We are working on a project that examines the dissemination of photovoltaic (PV) and wind energy systems in Africa and the role of these systems in the socioeconomic development of rural and poor urban communities in the continent.
We would greatly appreciate any assistance you may be able to provide in identifying possible sources of data and information on such energy projects in Botswana, Kenya, Lesotho, Namibia, Senegal, the Seychelles, South Africa, Tanzania, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. More specifically, we are interested in the following type of information:
1. the technical aspects of these projects including: the number of installed systems, their location, and the number of people they serve; their capacities and the types of technologies used; the systems' manufacturer(s); any local PV and wind system manufacturers and their production capacity; international aid agencies involved
2. the costs involved including: equipment costs; installation costs; taxes, tariffs and import fees; license fees; operation and maintenance costs
3. the ownership of the systems (private, cooperative, public)
4. their financing including: financing schemes and sources of financing; domestic financing and financing institutions; foreign aid and international agencies involved; ongoing (day to day) expenses
5. the institutional framework/actors government departments responsible for rural electrification; government agencies involved with renewable energy projects; NGOs and technology centers working on rural energy development, energy planning, PVs and wind systems
Thank you very much in advance.
Sincerely,
George Kassinis Woodrow Wilson School FAX: 609-258-1985 Princeton University E-MAIL: mailto:kassinis@wws.princeton.edu Princeton, NJ 08544-1013 or mailto:kassinis@phoenix.princeton.edu USA
