The George Washington University Center for International Health is
pleased to announce its 1995-1996 Professional Skills Series Workshops.
These workshops are designed for international health and development
professionals wishing to increase their skills and marketability.

Workshops are intensive, hands-on and are applicable to international and cross-cultural settings. instruction is provided by the Center's team of professional trainers. Workshops meet once a week (on Thursdays) from 6-8:30 pm, for four weeks, on the George Washington University campus. The registration fee for all workshops is $150 (+ a $50 fee for materials).

Professional Skills Series 1995-1996 - Schedule

September - October 1995 (4 weeks) *Assessing Community Health Needs: A Step-by-step Approach*

This workshop will give participants skills necessary to assess community health needs in cross-cultural and international seetings. Participants will learn practical skills in community assessment, community surveys, and methods of data collection, analysis and interpretation. A specific case study will be used to illustrate applicable concepts and techniques of community assessment. This workshop will be based on a unique set of training materials,the Primary Health Care Management Advancement Program (PHC MAP) modules.

November - December, 1995 *Quality Assurance: A Guide for Managers of International Health Programs*

Quality Assurance initiatives are designed to help managers define guidelines and standard operating procedures to assess and evaluate services, and to take steps toward improving program performance and effectiveness. This workshop will provide skills and techniques in managing health programs, assessing the quality of health services and management, and the design of programs for improving quality in each of these areas. This program will also utilize the PHC MAP materials.

February, 1996 *Participatory Research Methods: RAP and Beyond*

Effective assessment of health services and health status at the local level requires community participation at all stages of the research process. This workshop introduces methods and applications in qualitative and participatory techniques, including focus group methodology, community mapping, key informant interviews, household inventories, participant observation, and purposive surveys.

April-May, 1996 *Institutional Strengthening and Capacity Building*

This workshop will give participants greater understanding and knowledge of strategic organization and human resource planning, monitoring and evaluation of programs. Participants will learn about and discuss managerial challenges, issues and constrain ts facing NGOs such as: sustainability, community participation, networking, voluntarism, and professionalization of NGOs.
