TDA to Sponsor Conference in Portland, Oregon to Assist U.S. Companies Explore $3 2.5 Billion in Asian Power Opportunities Key Clinton Administration Officials to Offer Assistance to Boost Exports

Washington, D.C. , June 6, 1995 - The U.S. Trade and Development Agency (TDA) wi ll host a two-day symposium to assist U.S. companies in tapping an estimated $32. 5 billion in Asian power projects on July 28-29, 1995, at the Benson Hotel in Por tland, Oregon. Senior power industry executives from Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Thailand will detail plans for rural electrification programs and expanded electr ical capacity at the "Asian Power Sector Development Symposium. " Officials from TDA, the World Bank, the U.S. Export-Import Bank, and the Overseas Private Invest ment Corporation also will attend to provide information on federal trade promoti on and financing programs to assist U.S. companies tap this expanding market. "Economic development in the industrializing nations of Southeast Asia is sparki ng an increased demand for electricity throughout the region and it is critical t hat U.S. companies get in on the early stages of these projects," says TDA Direct or J. Joseph Grandmaison. "President Clinton is committed to assisting U.S. compa nies to increase their exports to Asia, creating jobs for Americans and providing high-quality products and technology to the region." One component of the symposium is TDA's arrangement of "deal making meetings" du ring the meeting. In advance, U.S. firms can meet with Asian project sponsors and TDA consultants in one-on-one settings to discuss project details. Symposium attendees also will receive a comprehensive briefing book on key proje cts. This resource guide also includes country profiles and information on the le gal, regulatory, and tax environment that affects U.S. companies providing goods and services in each nation. Following the symposium, which is timed to follow the annual meeting of the Powe r Engineering Society (PES) in Portland, the Asian officials will embark on a six -day orientation visit to U.S. power facilities and equipment manufacturers. The TDA mission will include stops at the Bonneville Power Administration, the Califo rnia Public Utilities Commission, and the Electric Power Research Institute. The U.S. Trade and Development Agency, based in Rosslyn, Va., is an independent federal agency that assists in the creation of jobs for Americans by helping U.S. companies pursue overseas business opportunities. TDA provides American firms wi th market entry, exposure and information through the funding of feasibility stud ies, technical assistance, and reverse trade missions. These efforts help America n businesses establish a position in markets that are otherwise difficult to pene trate.
