First International Conference

INTERCULTURAL INTERACTION AND DEVELOPMENT: CONVERGING PERSPECTIVES

Hanoi, Vietnam * 25-28 September 1995

The University of Technology, Sydney (Australia) and the Hanoi National Pedagogic University (Vietnam), are organising an international conference on intercultural interaction and development, to be held in Hanoi from 25 to 28 September, 1995.

The main purpose of the conference is to provide a forum to establish professional and cross-professional links in the key areas of education, health and communication technology between Vietnam, Australia and other OECD countries.

The conference objectives are:

* to bring together professionals, scholars, policy makers and those interested in professional intercultural interaction and development

* to develop active interaction and information exchange of researchers and research institutes between Australia, other OECD countries and Vietnam in the areas of education, health and communication technology

* to set up long term international links between tertiary education, health and communication technology professionals in Vietnam, Australia and other OECD countries

* to promote the development and support the improvement of managerial and educational skills in Vietnam

* to support the development of sustainable long term initiatives, particularly in the areas of distance education and adult literacy

* to assist the Vietnamese higher education sector to develop its expertise in areas such as health education, language education, information technologies and educational marketing

* to present the "state of the art" in different research areas of intercultural awareness

anticipated outcomes of the conference are:

* the setting up of links in the area of research, marketing and professional exchanges through the establishment of contacts and the drafting of joint projects and research proposals in the areas of tertiary education, health and communication technology

* the active encouragement, through the participation of OECD countries, of interaction between Australia, Vietnam and its neighbouring countries, Laos, Cambodia and Thailand, in order to broaden Australia's image in this area and develop concrete networks in Asia

* the setting up of an international scholarship fund for Vietnamese university students.

In addition to plenary papers, workshops and small committee sessions, the conference program will include sessions specifically aimed at the establishment of linkages, joint projects and research proposals between Vietnam, Australia and other OECD countries.
