A rather short sighted view. If a person/group can not profit from a specific and limited result of an effort, a lot of efforts will not be undertaken. The medical industry is a general example.A specific example is the genetic altering of some animals so their products (insulin for example) and parts (heart, lungs) can be used by humans without rejection or loss of effectiveness.
If it's you or your family in need, I bet you'd choose to pay the cost of obtaining what was needed from the patent holder rather than not having it because what was needed was not developed because it couldn't be patented.
