Hi Art --We have been working with Mae and her Institute and are in the process of developing an MOU with them. The idea is to ho d a series of meetings on the three consortia VITA hopes to coordinate related to our low earth orbiting email satellite project for rural areas: satellite providers, NGOs, and the 'knowledge network.' Once the relationship has been formali ed, we will announce it on our website (www.vita.org).

Greetings,
Is anyone here familiar with, had any dealings with, worked with, or just has an opinion on the organizations that Dr. Mae C. Jemison (former NASA Astronaut and a medical doctor) has founded, namely, the Jemison Group (Houston, Texas, USA), and the Jemison Institute for Advancing Technology in Developing Countries (Dartmouth College, Hanover, New Hampshire, USA)?
>From what I have read over the years, and from what I recently read on the
institute's web site (http://www.dartmouth.edu/~jemison/), their mission seems to be very closely aligned with the mission of both SatelLife (http://www.satellife.org/) and Volunteers in Technical Assistance (http://www.vita.org/).However, one thing I've had trouble understanding is exactly where Dr. Jemison's organizations fit into the existing scheme of things.
Are they serving as a clearing house of information, an academic adjunct to the grassroots work the other organizations do, or as a more abitious version of the same thing?
In particular, I don't see clear evidence that there has been much collaboration or dialogue between Dr. Jemison and the folks at SatelLife and VITA. Can anyone give me some insight?
No, I am not a reporter, and in fact am a big fan of Dr. Jemison's.
I'm not trying to dig up any "dirt", I'm just trying to get a better understanding of how folks are working together in the African health and development community.
Thank you in advance.
